Are the New York Giants in a good position to make the playoffs?
Is the only way the Giants get a home game in the playoffs is win the division despite the fact they could have a better record then the NFC South and West Champion?
Despite the fact that the Giants would have a better record than the NFC South and West Champions, yes, the New York Giants would have to win their division to receive home-field advantage in the playoffs. With more or less 2-3 more wins, I'd say that the Giants have clinched their playoff berth. But nevertheless, they won't be winning their division anytime soon, they don't have a sole chance at catching up with the way the Dallas Cowboys are going. But even though they won't receive home field advantage, through the wild card they'll still get into the playoffs and isn't that the important part?

I am a Dallas Cowboys fan. Right now, the New York Giants are 11-3, and the Cowboys are 9-5. Given that New York losed the last two and Dallas wins the last two, they would both be 11-5. The Giants beat the Cowboys earlier this season, and the Cowboys won last night. So how is it that New York has clinched the division? Thanks!
Even if both teams end up 11-5, the Giants will have the tie breaker. The first tie breaker is head to head, in which they are even. The next step in the tie breaking process is divisional record, or how many wins and losses they have to teams within the NFC East. Again, the teams could both be 4-2. The next step in the tie breaking process is common games, or the teams' records for games against teams they both played. As the NFC East plays the AFC North and the NFC West, each teams records against these two divisions make up their common games record. If Dallas wins the rest of their games, they will both be 3-1 against the AFC North. So it rests on their records against the NFC West. Dallas is 2-2 against that division, and New York is 4-0. Therefore, even if Dallas wins the rest and the Giants lose the rest, the Giants will have the tie breaker.
