What is a great strategy for No-limit Texas Holdem poker?

My strategy at the moment is tight and aggressive. I only call if I have doubles or 2 royals, and then I usually go for it with my bets. How can I improve this strategy? Or a better one?

Calling with pairs is good but you will often have to fold the small pairs after the flop if you don't improve to trips. The implied odds of winning a big pot with trips is usually why people call raises with small pairs. However, the poker books I have read recommend folding a small pair to a raise unless the price to call only represents 5 to 12 percent of your stack or less. Also, the raiser has to have a stack size at least as big as yours or he simply doesn't have enough chips to pay you off should your "investment" in the small pair have a favorable result. Since you have to hit your trips against long odds and your opponent has to also hit a hand big enough to give you action on your trips, clearly a lot has to go right for you to win a big pot with a small pair starting hand. Hence, small pairs should typically be played only when they can be played cheaply.

With aces you can go for it. With kings you can almost always go for it. With queens it helps to know something about whoever is in the hand with you. If he is some donkey who thinks ace ten is worth all his chips, you are a 7 to 3 favorite to win the hand. But if he is the type of player who would only move in with kings or aces, you need to be more careful with queens or jacks.

I would be very careful with two royals that are not ace king or ace queen. You have to think about what kinds of hands people would be likely to get involved with when you raise with ace king or ace queen. Even pocket deuces wins about half the time against ace king since the ace king is a drawing hand that needs help from the board to improve over the deuces. The good thing, however, about ace king is that it is not a big underdog to anything except kings and aces. The problem with playing queen jack or similar hands that are a couple of notches below ace king is that you will often be dominated by something like ace jack. This is a terrible situation to be in because the hand that dominates you is a 7 to 3 favorite. Your main out is a queen or a long-shot straight. What you will find is that with hands like king queen, king jack, queen jack, etc. you will lose a lot of money when you don't hit a straight. Let the donkeys play those hands and bust them up with your aces, kings, queens, and ace kings. Note, that it is okay to play trap hands such as queen jack but if you make just a pair as opposed to the straight that you were hoping for and someone strangely moves all in you will mostly be beat and have to fold your hand.

So, to sum it up, push your premium hands by trying to get some money in the pot preflop but try to see some cheap flops (preferably in position) that give you good implied odds with some of the more speculative hands like suited connectors and small pairs. If you don't hit the flop hard with your speculative hands and other players are moving mountains of chips into the pot, you can easily fold the hand. Also, run a few bluffs every now and then. Try not to bluff so often that you lose money because people know you bluff too much and call you. But try not to bluff so rarely that people think you never bluff. You want people to think that you ocassionally bluff so that when you have monster hands and they have second best hands they will give you some action on your monster hands. If you simply play ABC poker, people will know when you have good hands and you won't be able to win. Put pressure on them with well timed bets, raises, and occasional bluffs and they will become more likely to make a mistake at some point. And since, over the long term, everyone gets the same distribution of good hands and bad hands, your opponents' mistakes ultimately is how money is made in poker.

Let It Ride betting strategy?

I'm going to Vegas in two weeks. My favorite game to play is Let It Ride, I've played it on a couple of cruises and won quite a bit. There are a lot of sites that show the optimal playing strategy, like what hands to let it ride on, as well as odds and payout tables. I understand the house edge is about 3.5% with optimal playing strategy. But what I would like to know, is there a betting strategy for Let It Ride? I don't think any of the Blackjack ones would work like increasing bets every time you win or lose a hand, since in Let It Ride you win less than 1 out of 4 hands on average. Does anyone know of any betting strategies for this game that can produce higher payouts? Line when to increase or decrease the bet size?

Obviously, you're not going to decrease the house edge by changing your betting strategy. I think you know that, but I wanted to make it clear before I get 800 thumbs down from people who don't bother to read my entire response, or are intent on pounding it into the ground that you're destined to lose and it doesn't matter what you do.

Anyway, with table games like Let It Ride and others where you're not going to win about half the time, I recommend increasing and decreasing your bets based on benchmarks rather than the results of the immediate previous hand. For example, say you buy into a $10 table and start off betting the minimum. If you get up by say $100, increase your bets to $15 per spot. If you lose about $50 of your profit ($45 or $60, your choice), take your bets back down to $10. If you get up another $150 ($250 total profit), bump your bets up to $20. Again, if you get down about half of that (-$75, or at a total profit of $175) move back to $15 bets.

If you win another $200, you can go one of two ways. If you're feeling lucky, continue to bump up your bets at the same rate (if you haven't picked it up, the pattern is to increase by $5 every time you win $10, and decrease by $5 every time you lose 5 units). If you instead want to lock in some profit before the bets get too high, bank all or most of your profit (set it aside or stick it in your pocket where you can't see it) and start the pattern over. You can go back to your original $10 bets, or start over with $15 bets, moving up and down with the same pattern.

There is no such thing, it is all scams and pipe dreams my friend. I live and work in Vegas and i can tell you that these billion dollar hotel casinos are made on losers and not winners.I have been dealing poker for over 4 years now and i can tell you that i have only come in contact with 1 or two people who made a living betting sports or the horses. It takes more skill then I'll ever have to do that so i keep my day job. All casino games have a house edge, so in the long run you will lose money to these places, i don't play any table game besides poker, poker has no house edge at all. I don't give out my strategies for free (or cheaply, for that matter) but I will say in general to stay away from the prop bets (hard ways, horn bet, etc) and stick with the pass line, don't pass line, and place bets. You will do alright with these if you manage your money well and don't go crazy. The don't pass line has slightly better odds than the pass line, so if you're only going to make one bet, the don't pass with odds is the way to go. (and don't listen to anyone who tells you not to take odds on the don't pass line --like casino dealers -- they don't know what they're talking about).

As far as setting dice goes, the throw is a lot more important than the set. If you don't have a skilled toss, it doesn't matter how you set them. If you want to do it anyway, the best set on the come out (assuming you're shooting from the pass line) is 7's all around with the 6's and 1's pointing out. Once the point is up, make a V with the 3's if the point is 5, 6, 8, or 9, and a V with the 2's if the point is 4 or 10. With the first set you should have 6's and 8's on all 4 sides if you rotate them on axis, and with the second set you should see 4's and 10's.

I dont play the pass or dont pass line. I just make place bets on the 6 and 8. Once the 6 or 8 hit, I take the bets off. If the table seems hot, lets say I have a $12 6 and a $12 8 and I hit, I then place a $6 6 and a $6 8 so that way its a no lose situation for me, and I if the table stays hot, I can take advantage of the hot table.

I don't know if that will consistentally win. I have seen so many 7 outs on the first roll. For every 7 out, you would need 2 sucessful wins.

How do you deal and bet in a game of Texas Hold'em?

My family has a game night were we play cards every week and bet with fake chips to add some more fun and we decided to try Texas Hold'em. I haven't played in over a year but I do remember the rules and basics but I can not remember the proper way to deal the cards and WHEN everyone is suposed to place their bets. I know strategies and such but just forget dealing and betting...can you help me?

for more than 2 players, the cards should be dealt starting to the right of the button (the small blind) and continue clockwise until both players have two cards (the button should get the last card). headsup is a bit more complicated, but i think the first card is dealt to the big blind.

postflop, the action begins to the right of the button (the small blind acts first) and goes clockwise to the button, and heads up, the big blind acts first postflop

for betting, the betting can happen anytime, but only if its their turn to act can they put chips into the pot

betting minimums are 1 big blind on all streets. when you raise it has to be at least twice the players bet, and of course you can go all in at any time. this is if youre playing no limit holdem, you didnt specify, but im assuming. playing limit is a bit less exciting but easier to track betting.

but heres a rundown for it:

preflop: deal the cards, start at the player to the right of the big blind, then they get to call, raise, or fold. continue until everyone who wants to play has put money in (action usually ends at the big blind but if theres more then 1 raise, it goes back to the original raiser, or if theres people who call, then a raiser, it goes back to the first caller). keep going until everyone left to act has folded or called. once that is done...

flop: burn 1 card (put it facedown and out of play), then deal 3 cards. start to the right of the button and continue clockwise until everyone has acted. if it checks around, go to the turn. if theres a bet, it continues past the button, and goes back to the first checker. keep going until everyone has either folded or called.

turn: burn 1 card again, then put down 1 more card. do the same as flop

river: burn 1 card again, then put down 1 more card. do the same

then showdown is simple, give the winning hand the pot, but the winning hand HAS to show both cards.

I play no-limit texas-hold 'em poker with my family. Most of the players don't know how to play (just bet big when they have a pair or they bluff with a low pair) and there are only 2 players that know a little about poker strategy and I really need some money for a laptop I wanna buy.

The best advice I can give with the information you provided is adjust your playing style to opposite of the style of the table. For example if you notice that everyone is playing tight bet more aggressive and bluff more. Or if everyone is playing lose tighten up and only play premium hands.

One clear advantage you have is that your are playing against regular opponents which gives you a chance to study and take notes on there style and tendencies. Does your uncle bluff a with weak hands and slow play the strong ones? Is your cousin super tight and conservative? Knowing the answers to these questions can make your decision to call, fold or raise much easier.

Don't forget that your are watching you to so change things up from time to time. Do the opposite of what you normally would do occasionally. Change gears and keep 'em guessing.

A person should start with a pass line bet with full odds. Next step would be to have come bets also with full odds. Remember the flat bet will be paid even money. It is the odds that will make the money. Once a player get comfortable with the game, place bets should be the next step. The trick with place bets is to press these bets at least one unit every time they hit.

Try avoiding the field and prop bets such as the hop bets. These are one roll bets. If you want to play the hard way bets always parlay them.
