Rookie Card
Rookie Card

How much would you pay for a rookie card collection?
How much would you pay for a package containing Sidney Crosby, Ryan Getzlaf, Cristobal Huet, Dion Phaneuf, Ryan Miller, Thomas Vanek, Jeff Carter, MIke Richards, Mikko Koivu and Johan Franzen. All rookie cards all mint condition.
The problem is that there are so many different brands of cards now. Instead of one Gordie Howe rookie (1951 Parkhurst) or two Wayne Gretzky rookies (1979 Topps and O-Pee-Chee, which are the same card but in US/Canadian versions), you've got a dozen or so cards of the same player spread out amongst three or more companies and a dozen or so sets. Plus you've got 'limited edition' parallel versions and subsets and whatnot. It all gets very confusing.
You have to know which card is the ONE rookie for each player to get, and that can change over time. I specialize strictly in vintage hockey now, haven't done the research, and can't tell you which is the best Crosby to buy.
But out of those players, I'd stick with Crosby and maybe Phaneuf and Vanek.
As big a Sabres fan as I am and as much as I like Ryan Miller, he's never going to be a Patrick Roy, who is the only rookie card amongst goalies that's really valuable since Ken Dryden's 1971 Topps/OPC. The best goalie to come along since Roy, Marty Brodeur, was the first great goalie to have cards in the 'modern, multiple-producer, over-produced' era, and his best card, 1990 Score (Canadian version) is worth less than $10 unless it's professionally slabbed, which is going to add $10 to $15 to your cost with no guarantee of a top grade.
Your best chance at scoring a great, valuable (someday) rookie card is searching through the complete listing of every player in every set made each year, looking for those who somehow fell through the cracks and escaped notice of all but one company, thusly, they have only one (maybe two) rookie cards. Then hope that the guy turns into a superstar someday. Otherwise, things are too watered down today.
