You are looking at 2 screens at the OTB. One is a race with 10 horses. You like the 3-1 . Well the other screen has a 3-1 with 6 horses in the race, Why would any one bet the 10 horse race?
The reason you might consider the 10 horse field is that the 3-1 horse might look like the dominant horse with no ligament contenders.While the 6 horse field may have some contenders that may be capable of a challenge.

Instead of studying handicappers, your friend should learn to read the form on a horse.
A horse race is a multitude of variables.
Is the horse going up or down in class and distance? Dirt, turf or synthetic?Is there a trainer or jockey change? Is the horse running on Salix for the firsst time? Or running without it after consecutive races with it? Does his pedigree say he is a sprinter and he's going long? How does the horse look and act today?
Your friend should familiarize himself with conditions, bloodlines, medications, jockeys and trainers.
